Valentine’s Day offers Pink Lady promotional opportunities

Valentine’s Day and Pink Lady apples are perfect partners for retail promotions, according to a news release from Domex Superfresh Growers, Yakima, Wash.

Cross-promotions with cheese, wine and chocolate or caramel dips and front page display advertisements are among the approaches that take advantage of the apple variety, which has racked up consistent year-to-year sales increases of 15%, according to the release. Creativity can help boost Pink Lady sales in February.

“Cross-promotions with items in a secondary location are sure-fire ways to increase apple sales.” Howard Nager, vice president of marketing for Domex Superfresh, said in the release.

Such promotions also spur cross-store shopping, he said.

The Pink Lady apple pairs particularly well with savory ingredients, such as onions, chili peppers, dill, thyme, pink peppercorns and cheeses, the release said. Among cheeses, milder types such as Monterey Jack and medium cheddar go very well with Pink Lady apples.

February has been a historically good month for Pink Lady sales, the release said. It ranks in the top eight varieties in dollar sales.
